Life would be predicatable and boring if they didn't.

Personal illness, accidents, relationship dramas, even the washer or TV going wrong.

Unforeseen events help to test, and make, people's beliefs. A belief system is no use if it has nothing to say at a time of crisis, when you need it.

There's the ratonalist scientific view 'just because' - implying that life has no deeper meaning.

And there are a range of spiritual responses.

One would be to ascribe the effect to Fate. Though just saying it's all the fault of some Dark Goddess isn't actually much more helpful than the scientific view.

Personally I incline to something eclectic, with a big dose of Jung.

Jung believed that the Anima/us drives fate. There's a book 'The Anima as Fate' written at his suggestion. His protegee Marie-Louise von Franz has a great phrase 'the blessing of a hammer blow on the head'. When accidents happen, it's because the Anima/us wants to drag a person out of their routine for a purpose. And the purpose is Individuation.

Off topic - the Macondo BP oil well incident has fascinated me. Several Pagan blogs have been screaming about the environment and saying the spill is all the fault of - the oil industry, Obama, BP - but no-one (to my knowledge) is laying the blame at the door of a Dark Goddess.

Working out the meaning of an unexpected event is like like working out the meaning of a dream. Marie-Louise says it's very hard for a person to work out the meaning of their own dreams. People always guess wrong. ML said that Jung was the only person who could unravel her own dreams.

Here's my take on Macondo: the name Macondo, actually comes from a book about Gypsy Magic. One Hundred Years of Solitude, by Gabriel Marquez, p49 - a people were developing an illness which was making them forgetful. To remember the name of the town where they lived, they hung up two big signs 'MACONDO. GOD EXISTS'. Macondo has a meaning, I can assure you.

Back to your ugly duckling. Are you sure it isn't really a baby swan.

I can guarantee one thing - things never turn out as you expect, so something will happen to it, and to you.John Webbhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02966938808921010638noreply@blogger.com
